However, work is continuing remotely and staff are still responding to enquiries over email. On a brighter note, we have three virtual events planned during January to look forward to with details about these below.<\/h4>\n<h3><strong><em>The History of British Diplomacy in Pakistan <\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The first event of 2021 is a virtual book launch on the 19<sup>th<\/sup> January of Ian Talbot\u2019s, \u2018<em>The history of British diplomacy in Pakistan.\u2019<\/em> With contributions by Dr Rakesh Ankit and Professor Roger D.Long, the book presents an account of the British diplomatic mission in Pakistan from its foundation at the end of the Raj in 1947 to the \u2018War on Terror.\u2019 The author argues that the period witnessed immense changes in Britain\u2019s standing in the world and in the international history of South Asia to show that Britain maintained a diplomatic influence out of proportion to its economic and military strength. This book will be of particular interest to academics working in the fields of South Asian History &amp; Politics, International Relations, British and American Diplomacy &amp; Security Studies, Cold War Politics and History and Area studies.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-13644 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/royalasiaticsociety.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/book-launch-225x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"354\" height=\"472\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><em><strong>Acquiring Books in Eighteenth-Century Bengal<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<p>On the 21<sup>st<\/sup> January, Jonathan Lawrence will be giving a lecture to the Society on: <em>\u2018Acquiring Books in Eighteenth-Century Bengal: William Jones\u2019 Library.<\/em>\u2019 This lecture is based on a recent article Lawrence wrote for the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society about Sir William Jones and the Arabic and Persian manuscript collection that he acquired both before arriving in India in 1784, and during his time living in Kolkata. Sir William was also the founder of the Asiatic Society of Bengal in 1784. The Society holds material from Sir William within the archives, this includes a sales catalogue of the William Jones library where parts of his collection were sold at auction following his death.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archiveshub.jisc.ac.uk\/search\/archives\/fe7c4e16-f16f-39be-8e6d-93b38f730adc?component=a1a72d6f-7a1a-35f5-bada-571baeb6a1c1\">Sales Catalogue of William Jones&#8217; Library &#8211; Papers of Sir William Jones and Lady Anna Maria (Shipley) Jones &#8211; Archives Hub (jisc.ac.uk)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-13628 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/royalasiaticsociety.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Jonny-21st-January-Flyer-1-212x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"323\" height=\"457\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">This promises to be to an insightful event and early booking is recommended.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><em>Islamic movements in India <\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>As highlighted in the previous blog post, we have the book launch on the 29<sup>th<\/sup> January of the publication, <em>\u2018Islamic Movements in India\u2019<\/em> by Dr. Arndt Emmerich. This book analyses the emerging trend of Muslim-minority politics in India and suggests that a fundamental shift has occurred over the last 20 years from an identity-dominated, inward looking approach by Muslim community leaders, Islamic authorities and social activists towards an inclusive debate centred on socio-economic marginalisation and minority empowerment.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-13631 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/royalasiaticsociety.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Arndt-Emmerich-29th-January-Flyer_Page_1-1-212x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"323\" height=\"457\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you are interested in attending any of these events, please email Matty Bradley at <a href=\"mailto:mb@royalasiaticsociety.org\">mb@royalasiaticsociety.org<\/a> to register.
